Air Sampling
Systems High Sensitivity Smoke Detection
Air
sampling systems are designed to detect fire in high value
applications, where conventional fire detectors simply fail to
provide sufficiently rapid response. In applications where down time
is a critical factor, high sensitivity smoke detection systems
provide early warning fire detection up to 1000 times more sensitive
than conventional spot type fire detectors. This provides rapid fire
detection allowing facility personnel to address potential problems
before they result in costly down time.

The LaserPLUS detector provides a
highly sensitive, highly reliable form of aspirating detection. It
detects fire at the earliest possible stage and reliably measures
very low to extremely high concentrations of smoke. The Cheetah
control panel can be configured to communicate directly with one or
more LaserPLUS detectors via a High Level Interface (HLI). The High
Level Interface (HLI) provides bi-directional and fully supervised
communication between the Cheetah and the LaserPLUS. This
configuration provides an integrated approach to system operation by
providing each LaserPLUS detector the same functionality as a
Cheetah photo, ion, or heat detector.
The Display Module provides a real-time indication of the
status of a VESDA LaserPLUS Detector. It has a 20-segment vertical
bar graph, a two-digit numerical display, an audible sounder, and
clear alarm and fault indicators. It also has four pushbuttons to
control the detector and mode of the display.
The Programmer Module allows modification of the settings
of a VESDA LaserPLUS system. Using an intuitive menu system,
commissioning and maintenance of the system is convenient and
efficient. The programmer is the access tool to the individual
parameters on the LaserPLUS detectors and displays while also
facilitating the configuration and maintenance of many detectors
connected by VESDAnet.

Data
Sheets (PDF Format):
The VESDA system uses a Xenon
tube as the light source to bounce light off fire byproducts in the
detection chamber Vesda Air Sampling System. The VESDA air sampling
fire detection system detects the invisible byproducts of materials
as they degrade during the pre-combustion stages of an incipient
fire. And, by actively and continuously sampling air, the system
operates independently of air movements.
In
operation air samples are continuously drawn from the monitored
environment, typically through a sampling pipe network with the aid
of a high efficiency aspirator. On the way to the fire detector the
air samples pass through a filter assembly to screen out large
airborne dust particles. Once inside the air sampling detector the
samples are exposed to a high-intensity and broad-spectrum light
source. The incident light scattered from smoke particles in the air
sample passes through a series of optical components to a solid
state light receiver. The light is converted to an electronic signal
and passed to the control system.
At the
control module the signal is processed and presented on an analog
bar graph to visually indicate the level of smoke present in the
monitored area. Depending upon smoke levels and the preprogrammed
alarm levels, the appropriate output signals are
generated.
The first of the three staged alarm levels (ALERT)
may simply indicate that the system has detected something out of
the ordinary that should be investigated. The second level (ACTION)
indicates that a potential fire exists and that emergency procedures
should begin. The third level (FIRE) signifies an actual fire
condition.

The
KIDDE Orion HSSD detects particles of combustion at
levels of obscuration as low as 0.003% per foot; 1,000 times
faster than conventional smoke detectors.

Laser optics,
and Kidde's particle counting technology provide for a stable,
highly reliable incipient fire detector. An engineered &
balanced air sampling network insures equal sensitivity throughout
protected areas. Models are available to protect volumes from 5,000
to 20,000 square feet. Uniquely suited for high airflow
environments. Requires minimal maintenance.
The KIDDE ORION is widely used for ciritcal, high-asset equipment
protection; process controls, robotics, MIS facilities, and
automated conveyances.
