As mentioned previously a Class D Fire is one that involves combustible metals or combustible metal alloys. There are basically two types of Class D fire extinguishers.

Type 1: The extinguishing agent for type 1 Class D is Sodium Chloride. Heat from a fire causes the dry powder agent to cake and form a crust excluding air and dissipating the heat from the burning metal. The type 1 Class D extinguisher is effective at controlling magnesium, sodium, potassium, sodium potassium alloys, uranium, and powdered aluminum metal fires.

Type 2: The extinguishing agent for type 2 Class D is a copper based dry powder. The copper compounds smother the fire and provides an excellent heat sink for dissipating the heat of the fire. It is the only known Lithium fire fighting agent which will cling to a vertical surface thus making it the preferred on three dimensional and flowing fires

Maintaining portable fire extinguishers is important, and BFPE International can make the task easy and affordable. In many cases we can provide the annual test & inspection to a facility's portable fire extinguishers at NO COST, if we are already servicing other fire protection systems in the facility.

The Amerex "soft flow" extension applicator is particularly suited for fighting Class D fires. The easily controlled even discharge provides a non-disrupting application of either agent. The applicator may be quickly detached to provide a straight stream of chemcial where greater range, a narrow discharge pattern or a lobbing effect is required.

Badger
Class D -  Dry Powder

Badger's class D dry powder extinguisher is suitable for use on metal fires.  It incorporates a soft flow extension applicator that ensures the operator's hands are kept away from the extreme heat and prevents inhalation of the toxic fumes caused by the burning metal.

Model WB570 has been tested and approved for fires involving magnesium, sodium (spills and in depth), potassium and sodium potassium alloys.
